## Key takeaways

- Staking opened to eligible Interactive Brokers LLC clients on October 13.
- Combined IBKR and zerohash fees cannot exceed 30% of the staking rewards generated.
- Clients can request to unstake, but the assets are not released immediately.

The service starts with Ethereum. Clients manage requests through the IBKR portal, but their crypto is held at zerohash and does not receive the SIPC protection of a securities account.

Interactive Brokers [launched Ethereum staking on October 13](https://ibkr.interactiveadvisors.com/en/general/about/mediaRelations/10-13-26.php) for eligible Interactive Brokers LLC clients, with zerohash providing the service. ETH holders can submit staking and unstaking requests and track pending activity through the Staking Dashboard in Client Portal. Earned rewards are added to the staked crypto balance.

## Clients keep at least 70% of rewards

Under IBKR’s September 25 [client agreement supplement](https://ndcdyn.interactivebrokers.com/Universal/servlet/Registration_v2.formSampleView?formdb=4437&lang=en), the combined staking fees charged by Interactive Brokers and zerohash cannot exceed 30% of the rewards generated. Fees are deducted before rewards reach the client. No reward means no staking fee: the percentage applies to earned rewards, not the ETH balance committed to staking.

[Staking](https://kriptometa.com/en/glossary/staking) rewards come from validation on the Ethereum network, rather than a fixed interest payment by IBKR or zerohash. Network rules determine the amount, and income is not guaranteed. Adding the client’s net rewards to the staked position allows subsequent rewards to accrue on a larger balance.

## An unstaking request does not release funds immediately

The broker’s [staking risk disclosure](https://gdcdyn.interactivebrokers.com/Universal/servlet/Registration_v2.formSampleView?formdb=4436) says clients may request to unstake at any time, but completion depends on network conditions and [unbonding periods](https://kriptometa.com/en/liquid-vs-solo-staking). It warns that waiting can take weeks depending on the asset, without specifying a fixed release time for Ethereum. Assets cannot be sold or transferred until they become available again.

**Staking rewards do not protect [ETH’s](https://kriptometa.com/en/markets/ethereum) market value.** Prices can move during the waiting period. Validator protocol violations can also trigger [slashing penalties](https://kriptometa.com/en/glossary/slashing) that reduce staked assets.

The zerohash [user agreement](https://gdcdyn.interactivebrokers.com/Universal/servlet/Registration_v2.formSampleView?formdb=4438) provides for replacing assets lost to certain slashing incidents at no extra charge. Exceptions include network failures, client or third-party actions, attacks and events outside the company’s control. It therefore does not guarantee reimbursement for every slashing loss.

The crypto is held in an account in the client’s name at zerohash. IBKR provides the access interface rather than custody or validator operations. The risk disclosure states that staked crypto does not receive the SIPC protection applicable to the securities brokerage account.

## Up to 20 assets to trade, only ETH to stake

IBKR’s [crypto product page](https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/trading/products-cryptocurrencies.php) lists trading support for up to 20 digital assets. Staking starts with Ethereum alone. Availability varies by the IBKR affiliate and the client’s country of residence; the launch announcement provides no country-by-country eligibility list.

zerohash named Interactive Brokers among its first staking partners in its [June 25 infrastructure announcement](https://zerohash.com/press/zerohash-expands-consumer-digital-asset-functionality-with-launch-of-staking-infrastructure). Galik said then that the broker planned to offer the service in the future.
