What is Token Terminal? Onchain data and an example
Token Terminal is a research platform that presents blockchain activity through metrics such as fees, revenue and valuation. It is neither a trading exchange nor a wallet that holds assets.
Its fees metric tracks user payments. Revenue measures the amount retained on the protocol side after payments allocated to service providers. Protocol revenue is not automatically net profit after every expense, or money payable to tokenholders. The project-specific definition determines what enters the calculation.
Example
Alex compares two lending protocols over the same hypothetical 30-day period. Protocol A generates $100,000 in fees and retains $20,000 in revenue. Protocol B generates $80,000 in fees and retains $24,000. A collects more user payments; B retains more revenue. Treating the fees ranking as a revenue ranking would reverse their order.
A useful comparison matches dates, covered chains and product versions. A missing entry should not be read as zero. When two data providers disagree, checking their coverage is a better first step than choosing the larger number.
