What is OpenSea? The NFT marketplace explained
OpenSea is a digital marketplace for discovering NFT collections, viewing listings and making offers. Its interface brings artwork information and orders together. The ownership record remains on the relevant blockchain.
Is OpenSea a wallet or a blockchain?
OpenSea's NFT marketplace does not replace the network that records ownership or the wallet used to sign a transaction. Browsing a collection and signing a sale order are separate actions. A visible listing does not establish that a buyer will take it.
Example
In a hypothetical example, Alex sees token 42 from an Ethereum art collection on OpenSea. The seller asks 0.1 ETH and the highest bid is 0.08 ETH. OpenSea supplies the interface for comparing the item and orders, Alex's wallet supplies the signing tool, and Ethereum records a completed transfer. Opening the listing alone does not transfer the NFT to Alex.
Marketplace commission, creator royalties and gas can be separate costs. Buying the token does not automatically transfer copyright in the artwork. Our NFT buying checklist explains identity and license checks.
Our OpenSea review examines collection and offer screens, costs and practical limits using actual browser captures.
