Key takeaways

  • U.S. consumer prices rose 0.6% in September from August.
  • Annual inflation excluding food and energy reached 2.6%.
  • The Federal Reserve’s next policy meeting is on October 27–28.

Gasoline accounted for more than half of the monthly rise in U.S. consumer prices. Bitcoin’s initial decline after the release extended below $82,000 later in the session.

Bitcoin fell below $82,000 on October 14 after U.S. annual inflation accelerated to 3.7% in September. The data was released at 12:30 UTC. Coinbase’s Bitcoin price page showed roughly $81,645 at 16:07 UTC.

PrimeXBT’s intraday market report put Bitcoin at about $83,800 before the release and $82,800 in the first few minutes afterward. The later $81,645 quote was an intraday observation, not a closing price.

Gasoline drove more than half of the monthly increase

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ September consumer price report showed annual inflation rising from 3.4% in August to 3.7%. The seasonally adjusted monthly increase also accelerated, from 0.4% to 0.6%. Excluding food and energy, the core index rose 0.3% on the month and 2.6% over the year.

A 9.1% monthly jump in gasoline prices accounted for more than half of the overall monthly increase. Energy prices rose 5.2%, shelter costs increased 0.4% and the food index was unchanged. Energy drove much of the acceleration in headline inflation, while the monthly pace of core inflation held at August’s rate.

The report covers September. The October 14 release does not yet measure price changes during October. Monthly rates cited here are seasonally adjusted; annual rates are not.

BLS also announced the 0.6% monthly rise and the increase in gasoline prices on its official X account that day.

Treasury yields rose as stock futures declined

PrimeXBT’s report on the first minutes after the release said the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield rose 9.3 basis points to 5.308%, while the two-year yield climbed 13.1 basis points to 4.924%. Nasdaq 100 futures fell 0.65% and S&P 500 futures slipped 0.3%.

PrimeXBT cited forecasts of 3.6% for annual headline inflation and 2.5% for annual core inflation. Both readings came in 0.1 percentage point above those estimates. The 0.6% monthly headline increase matched expectations.

The next Fed meeting is on October 27–28

The Federal Reserve’s official calendar lists October 27–28 as its next policy meeting. Fed rate decisions can affect crypto demand through competing dollar returns, borrowing costs and investors’ willingness to take risk.

The Fed’s longer-run 2% inflation goal is based on the personal consumption expenditures price index (PCE), while the October 14 release measures CPI. The central bank also considers its maximum-employment mandate alongside price stability.
