A Changpeng Zhao biography often starts with Binance’s growth. Understanding CZ’s career also requires looking at his software background and the period after he left management. The CEO label on an old interview does not establish his current role.
How did his software career lead to Binance?
Born in China and raised in Canada, Zhao studied computer science at McGill University. Binance’s account of his background dates his family’s move to Canada to 1989. His early professional work concerned financial software rather than market commentary or social-media investing.
The company’s historical founder profile describes work on trading software for the Tokyo Stock Exchange and Bloomberg Tradebook. Binance launched in July 2017. Experience with systems that match orders and execute trades helps explain his technical background; it does not validate every later business decision.

Why did CZ leave the CEO role?
According to the Justice Department’s November 2023 announcement, Zhao pleaded guilty to failing to maintain an effective anti-money-laundering program and resigned as CEO. The corporate offenses and payments attributed to Binance are not identical to Zhao’s personal case.
The official clemency register records both the 2024 sentence and the October 21, 2025 pardon. Omitting the later development would leave an incomplete account, just as ignoring the earlier case would. Political explanations for the pardon are not substitutes for the legal record.
For a reader assessing an exchange, growth and compliance answer different questions. Transaction speed and product range do not measure customer-screening or oversight practices on their own. A founder’s reputation also does not remove the need to identify the legal entity providing an account.
Who manages Binance now?
Binance’s December 3, 2025 announcement says Yi He would share the CEO position with Richard Teng. That is the management announcement used in our September 27, 2026 check. An old interview describing CZ as CEO should not be read as a current job title.

Giggle Academy and life after executive management
Giggle Academy’s own description presents it as a free education platform for children founded by CZ. An educational product and an exchange’s investment products should not be assessed as if they were the same service. A social account using his name or picture does not establish affiliation with the education project.
Three questions help when interpreting his continued influence: is the individual speaking, is an authorized Binance executive speaking for the company, or is an unrelated account using his identity? Check the original statement and the institution’s own announcement. A prominent founder’s opinion does not guarantee a token’s investment return.
