Bitcoin-focused DeFi project Echo Protocol is winding down after nearly two years of operations. Existing users can still withdraw assets and repay outstanding debt.
Echo Protocol announced plans to cease operations in an official October 19 notice. The team said it had stopped accepting new funds and halted related interest accrual in its Lending service. Repayments, withdrawals and any necessary collateral liquidations remain available for existing positions.
Echo describes itself in its documentation as infrastructure that brings Bitcoin liquidity into different networks and DeFi applications. Its Aptos lending, strategy and liquid staking (LSD) services are covered by the wind-down. The notice does not explain the economic reasons for the decision or disclose the total amount owed to lenders.
Which exit routes remain open?
The team asks Lending users to repay debt, release collateral and withdraw available assets. Strategy users are asked to initiate exits and claim assets when eligible, while LSD users can continue through the existing unstake and claim process.
Submitting an exit request does not necessarily make LSD or Strategy assets immediately claimable. According to the notice, claim availability depends on the timing of the relevant staking and unstaking request. It gives no single waiting period that applies to every user.
The Aptos-to-B² Network bridge is treated separately for holders redeeming aBTC. The team says this redemption route will remain available after operations cease. The aBTC product documentation describes a token used on Aptos and backed one-to-one by BTC assets; the wind-down announcement provides no current reserve audit.
The notice gives conflicting repayment deadlines
The deadline is unresolved. The borrower section requires repayment by November 14, 2026 and says operations will cease afterward. The timeline in the same notice instead lists November 19, 2026 at 23:59 UTC as the final deadline for repayments, withdrawals and unstaking. The later entry is not an explicit correction of the earlier date.
The withdrawal and repayment process is dated to start at 00:00 UTC on October 19. The notice says collateral associated with unpaid loans may be liquidated, with proceeds applied toward obligations to lenders. Dates for liquidation, distribution and final completion have yet to be confirmed.
Echo also experienced a security incident earlier this year. In its May 19 statement, the team reported a compromised administrator key affecting the eBTC deployment on Monad and approximately $816,000 in affected assets; it said the Monad network itself was unaffected. On June 4, Echo announced that its Aptos services had been restored. The wind-down notice does not explicitly link that incident to the decision to close.
The team warns users to ignore private requests to transfer funds to a wallet or provide a signature. It directs anyone needing assistance to open a support ticket in its official Discord server.
