What is Bitcoin (BTC)?

Added:
Updated:

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency network whose distributed participants validate transfer records. BTC is its native unit. New issuance follows protocol rules; a central issuer cannot raise it by a unilateral decision.

Are Bitcoin’s network and BTC the same thing?

The network carries and validates transactions; BTC is the asset being transferred. “Bitcoin is operating” describes the network, while “BTC fell in price” describes its market valuation. The network can function normally while the price falls.

Example

One BTC divides into 100 million satoshis. For example, 0.001 BTC equals 100,000 satoshis. Using Bitcoin does not require buying a whole coin.

What does owning bitcoin mean?

Someone holding BTC in their own wallet controls spending through their keys. An exchange balance depends instead on the service’s custody arrangements. The distinction concerns the custody model.

BTC is not company stock or an automatic entitlement to interest. Transaction validation does not establish that a recipient is trustworthy. Bitcoin’s introductory explanations help distinguish network operation from market value.

The network’s basic rules differ from developments that can affect its market. Bitcoin news provides a separate place to follow ETF decisions and other developments.

The Bitcoin supply and demand analysis explains why limited supply alone does not establish a price direction.
