What are Ethereum and ether (ETH)?

Added:
Updated:

Ethereum is a blockchain network that can run programs as well as record transactions. Ether (ETH) is its native crypto asset. When someone says they have bought Ethereum, they usually mean ETH, not ownership of the network itself.

The difference between Ethereum and ETH

Programs on Ethereum use smart contracts to perform actions such as transfers, swaps and lending. Mainnet transaction fees are paid in ETH. ETH also supports participation in validation through staking; holding it in a wallet does not automatically earn staking rewards.

Example

For example, sending another token on Ethereum may involve a transfer amount denominated in that token and a network fee denominated in ETH. Having enough of the token to send does not establish that the wallet has enough ETH for the fee.

Is every token on Ethereum the same as ETH?

No. Stablecoins and application tokens issued on Ethereum are distinct assets. Sharing a network does not give them the same value, risks or purpose. The network’s security properties do not guarantee that an application is free of defects either.

Ethereum’s explanation of ether describes the native asset’s role in fees and security. Assessing ETH’s future price is a separate analytical question from defining the network and its asset.

The Ethereum valuation analysis examines network use, fees and ETH valuation as distinct measures.
