What is a centralized crypto exchange (CEX)?

CEX stands for “centralized exchange.” A company or organization operates the accounts, trading service and usually custody. “Centralized” does not mean that the underlying crypto network must itself be centrally controlled.

Who runs a trade on a centralized exchange?

An order-book platform matches compatible buy and sell orders. An instant-buy service may use a different quoting or routing arrangement. The provider’s terms explain which model applies.

Example

For example, buying BTC inside a platform reduces the fiat balance and increases the BTC balance. The update can happen in the operator’s records; each purchase need not correspond to a separate blockchain transaction for that user. Withdrawal to an external address is a different stage.

Is an exchange balance the same as a personal wallet?

No. In a custodial exchange account, the provider manages the keys; access and withdrawals depend on the account’s conditions. The distinction from a wallet controlled through personal keys is explained by custody models.

A central operator may provide account recovery and customer support. Its outages, security and ability to meet obligations also affect users.
