Compare eight crypto exchange services for U.S. users, from dollar funding and spot fees to withdrawal costs, state access and the limits of reserve reports.
The best crypto exchanges for a U.S. reader must first support the reader’s state, bank funding method and chosen asset. A low fee on an unavailable overseas service is no bargain. Coinbase Advanced, Kraken Pro, Gemini ActiveTrader, Binance.US, Bitstamp, Crypto.com Exchange, OKX US and bitFlyer USA form our eight-service shortlist. Their strengths differ, and none is a risk-free place to keep savings.
KriptoMeta compared public fee schedules, product documentation and dated reported spot volumes. We looked at the route from depositing dollars to trading and withdrawing, rather than treating the biggest turnover figure as the winner. The review covers public information and the screens shown below; it does not claim that we funded eight accounts, tested support response times or audited their custody systems. Our exchange-fee comparison calculates what remains from the same budget after commission and execution-price differences, using Coinbase and Kraken product disclosures.
Which crypto exchange fits your needs?
| Service | Worth examining for | Check before funding |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase Advanced | USD spot trading with order-book controls | Account fee tier, state and asset eligibility |
| Kraken Pro | Trading controls and a published tiered tariff | Local availability and withdrawal holds |
| Gemini ActiveTrader | An order-book alternative with a U.S. presence | Current entry-level fees; do not use the basic-app tariff |
| Binance.US | Low published spot commission | State support, USD services and pair depth |
| Bitstamp | A bank-funded spot account | U.S. entity, Basic versus order-book pricing |
| Crypto.com Exchange (U.S.) | Exchange trading with U.S. ACH funding | Exchange account access, fee tier and withdrawal charges |
| OKX US | Spot trading under the U.S. entity | State eligibility and U.S. fee schedule |
| bitFlyer USA | A focused BTC/USD or ETH/USD order-book comparison | Supported state, available markets and wire costs |
Start with two or three eligible services, then compare the same dollar amount, asset and withdrawal network. Country and state access can differ between products under one brand. A spot account does not imply access to that brand’s offshore derivatives, lending or staking products. Readers outside the United States should check their own local service rather than assume the U.S. list applies unchanged.
All eight are account-based trading services. A centralized exchange holds assets within its custody arrangement; opening an account does not give you the same control as keeping your own wallet keys. Decide whether you need a place to execute a trade or a place to hold assets for months before comparing account features.
What reported trading volume can tell you
| Reporting venue | 24h volume | What the number covers |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase Exchange | $1,093,190,422 | 26 Sep, 21:30 UTC snapshot; venue-wide, not U.S. retail alone |
| Kraken | $762,497,411 | 26 Sep, 21:30 UTC snapshot; venue-wide, not U.S. retail alone |
| Crypto.com Exchange | $271,671,169.79 | 27 Sep source capture; exchange-wide, not a separate U.S. total |
| Bitstamp by Robinhood | $181,861,821.89 | 27 Sep source capture; venue-wide, not U.S. retail alone |
| Gemini | $24,290,534.05 | 27 Sep source capture; reported Gemini venue |
| Binance.US | $12,768,672.32 | 27 Sep source capture; Binance.US venue only |
| OKX US | Not separately verified | The global OKX total is not substituted |
| bitFlyer USA | Not separately verified | The Japan/global total is not substituted |
The first two figures retain our original CoinMarketCap spot-exchange snapshot; the linked venue pages supplied the other dated figures during this revision. Rows with verified figures are displayed in descending order, but the captures are not simultaneous. They are a scale comparison, not a live ranking of U.S. customer activity or the eight largest U.S. exchanges. An unverified local figure is not zero.
Venue-wide turnover can include markets you cannot access. For execution, inspect your actual pair: the gap between the best buy and sell prices and the depth near your order matter more than turnover elsewhere on the platform. A $500 BTC/USD order and a $20,000 order in a thinly traded token can have very different outcomes on the same exchange.
Spot trading fees: compare the product, not just the brand
| Product | Maker / taker | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase Advanced | Check signed-in tier | Official help directs users to their account fee page |
| Kraken Pro | 0.40% / 0.80% | Current standard first tier; special pair schedules differ |
| Gemini ActiveTrader | 0.60% / 1.20% | Base spot tier; schedule dated 1 September 2026 |
| Binance.US | 0% / 0.02% | Most spot pairs; BNB/USD taker 0.01%; no BNB discount included |
| Bitstamp order book | 0.30% / 0.40% | Standard pairs below $10,000 in 30-day volume |
| Crypto.com Exchange (U.S.) | Check applicable account tier | Do not substitute the App quote or an offshore tariff |
| OKX US | 0.20% / 0.35% | Regular U.S. tier in the 2026 framework; special zero-fee pairs differ |
| bitFlyer USA Lightning | 0.10% trading fee | BTC/USD and ETH/USD below $50,000 in 30-day volume; not a maker/taker split |
A maker order rests on the book and supplies liquidity; a taker order immediately matches available orders. A limit order is not automatically a maker order. If its price crosses the spread, it can execute as a taker. Basic purchase screens may include a spread or a different service fee, so an order-book rate should not be used to estimate every purchase made in the app.
The eight exchanges, with practical strengths and limits
1. Coinbase Advanced: compare the order ticket with the simple buy quote
Coinbase Advanced is a useful starting point for an eligible U.S. customer who wants to fund in dollars and inspect an order before submitting it. Its Advanced fee documentation explains the maker/taker model and directs customers to their signed-in fee tier. We have not filled that gap with an old rate taken from a comparison site.
- Strength: an order-book workflow makes the order type and fee tier explicit.
- Limit: the simple purchase experience and Advanced can produce different costs. State, asset and account restrictions still need checking.

Before a first purchase, compare the final amount of crypto received for the same dollar budget in both workflows. The first crypto purchase guide explains the budget and order checks without turning account registration into a recommendation to buy.
2. Kraken Pro: clear trading controls, with a tariff worth reading closely
Kraken Pro belongs on the shortlist when you want an order book and more control over execution. The published fee schedule inspected for this article starts at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker for the standard first tier. Special markets and other Kraken products can use different schedules; a remembered headline rate is not enough.
- Strength: the public tariff lets you compare tiers before moving funds.
- Limit: a lower tier may depend on qualifying volume. Generating trades only to unlock it can cost more than it saves.
Check whether your funding method creates a withdrawal hold, especially if you intend to transfer crypto out immediately after buying. Our Kraken review covers the product in more detail; eligibility and the current account quote remain the deciding checks for a U.S. user.
3. Gemini ActiveTrader: a U.S. option whose entry fee deserves attention
Gemini lists its supported U.S. jurisdictions on its availability page. For spot orders, the ActiveTrader schedule dated 1 September 2026 shows 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker at the base tier. That is $6 or $12 on a $1,000 trade before other costs. Higher qualifying tiers and specified stablecoin pairs differ.
- Strength: the published table distinguishes order type, trading volume and qualifying asset balances.
- Limit: the base taker charge is material for small, frequent trades. Do not compare it with another venue’s high-volume promotional rate.

Read the product name as carefully as the percentage. A quote in a basic app is not evidence of what an ActiveTrader order will cost, and access to Gemini in one country should not be inferred from an English-language website.
4. Binance.US: low spot commission, with local access and depth to check
Binance.US’s current public tariff lists 0% maker and 0.02% taker on most spot pairs, before any BNB discount. BNB/USD has a separate 0.01% taker rate. The published ACH deposit and withdrawal charge is zero, while wire and crypto withdrawal routes have their own costs. Confirm USD-service availability for your state.
- Strength: low published spot commission can reduce the execution cost of a straightforward order.
- Limit: a low percentage does not compensate for a wide spread, thin depth or an unavailable cash-out route.
The volume row uses Binance.US itself. A similarly branded overseas venue’s turnover, token catalogue and fee tier do not describe this account. Compare the actual BTC/USD or other local pair you plan to use, not the size of the wider brand.
5. Bitstamp: separate bank-funded order-book trading from Basic pricing
Bitstamp’s public page identifies Bitstamp USA as the provider for U.S. residents. Its fee schedule valid from 1 September 2026 lists standard order-book fees of 0.30% maker and 0.40% taker below $10,000 in 30-day volume. It lists ACH deposits and withdrawals as free of charge; other bank routes differ.
- Strength: the schedule sets out trading, bank-transfer and crypto-withdrawal charges separately.
- Limit: Basic Trading includes a spread. A promotional minimum fee or a UK-specific arrangement should not be treated as the default for a U.S. retail account.

For a small purchase, the useful question is what arrives in your account after the complete route. Check the standard column for your pair and the bank method you can actually use.
6. Crypto.com Exchange: use the U.S. Exchange workflow, not an App assumption
Crypto.com documents ACH deposits and withdrawals for U.S. retail Exchange users. The account and bank-account names must match. The page gives a typical ACH deposit time of one to five business days and explains that withdrawals can remain subject to separate USD withdrawal charges. A deposit becoming visible is not a promise of an immediate, unrestricted withdrawal.
- Strength: the U.S. Exchange documentation provides a dollar funding route to evaluate.
- Limit: the Crypto.com App, Exchange and self-custody wallet are different products. Their quotes and fees are not interchangeable.
Inspect the Exchange fee page and your account’s applicable U.S. tier before comparing costs. We have not copied a global or App percentage into the U.S. fee cell. A feature available elsewhere under the brand is not evidence that the same feature is enabled in your state.
7. OKX US: a local spot service with its own fee framework
The 2026 U.S. fee framework gives the regular tier a 0.20% maker and 0.35% taker rate across its three standard spot groups, with named zero-fee pairs handled separately. The document distinguishes OKX INC. from foreign affiliates and says U.S. users may not access those foreign services. We use the U.S. schedule here, not an EEA or offshore rate.
- Strength: a published U.S. framework makes the relevant spot tiers identifiable.
- Limit: the shared brand can obscure regional differences. Check state, asset and product eligibility before depositing.
There is no separately verified OKX US volume in our evidence table. Assigning the global figure to the U.S. service would make the comparison look more complete while answering the wrong question.
8. bitFlyer USA: a focused comparison for major dollar pairs
bitFlyer USA publishes a state availability list and a U.S. fee schedule. Lightning BTC/USD and ETH/USD trading is listed at 0.10% for trailing 30-day volume below $50,000. The quoted Buy/Sell prices include a pricing adjustment, so a zero transaction-fee label does not mean a zero-cost purchase. The listed Fedwire withdrawal charge is $20.
- Strength: the named dollar pairs and published volume bands make a focused cost check possible.
- Limit: wire costs can dominate a small transaction. Confirm the required asset, network and state are supported.
For example, a $20 wire charge is 4% of a $500 withdrawal before considering trading costs. If you only need a modest purchase, that bank route can matter more than a small difference in trading commission. The volume of a Japanese or worldwide bitFlyer listing does not establish turnover in a U.S. account.
What makes a crypto exchange trustworthy?
Trustworthiness needs several separate checks. Registration, a reserve page or a familiar logo does not remove custody risk. Use the following questions to reject an unsuitable service before comparing its rewards or headline fees.
- Who holds the account? Read the legal company named in the agreement and confirm that the service supports your residence and intended product.
- How is account access protected? Review available authentication, withdrawal controls and account recovery. Avoid treating a password alone as a complete safeguard.
- What does a reserve report establish? Inspect its date, asset and liability scope, and exclusions. The PCAOB’s investor advisory on reserve reports explains why such reports should not be read as comprehensive financial audits.
- Can you withdraw what you buy? Check the supported network, minimum amount, charge and any funding hold before a large deposit.
- What remains outside the evidence? Public documents cannot prove future solvency, uninterrupted withdrawals or how support will handle your case.
The proof-of-reserves explanation shows how a reassuring ratio can change when liabilities are missing. For longer-term holding, our crypto wallet comparison separates exchange custody from keeping your own keys. Self-custody changes who carries the operational responsibility; it does not remove the risk of lost backups or unsafe signing.
A $1,000 example: why the lowest commission can cost more
| Cost item | Venue A | Venue B |
|---|---|---|
| Trading commission | $1.00 (0.10%) | $2.00 (0.20%) |
| Execution difference from the reference quote | $3.00 | $1.00 |
| Crypto withdrawal charge | $8.00 | $2.00 |
| Total estimated cost | $12.00 | $5.00 |
The figures are illustrative, not quotes from the eight exchanges. Venue B costs $7 less despite charging twice the trading commission. The comparison assumes the same starting budget, reference price, asset and network; it excludes bank and tax costs. If your plan is to leave the crypto on the exchange, remove the withdrawal step from both routes rather than from only one.
For a bank cash-out, repeat the exercise with the sell order and USD withdrawal method. Compare the dollars expected in your bank account, not just the sale screen’s headline commission. Our crypto cash-out guide follows that route. For an external wallet transfer, use the crypto transfer checklist to confirm the asset and network match before sending.
Our selection method and what to recheck
The shortlist covers eight U.S.-serving spot products with public documentation useful for a retail comparison. It is not a claim that every service accepts every state, nor a ranking of the largest exchanges worldwide. We separate dated volume, verified fee cells and editorial observations so one metric cannot silently stand in for another.
Check the account’s legal entity, current tariff, available bank route and withdrawal screen again before funding. Service changes can alter a sensible shortlist without changing the brand name. Our crypto exchange news follows that wider category of developments; a recent fee or access announcement deserves attention before an old review does.
