What is Avalanche (AVAX)? Platform, token and networks

Added:

Avalanche is a platform on which blockchains can run different applications. AVAX is the native asset used for Primary Network fees and staking. The platform, token and particular chain an application uses are related, but they are not interchangeable.

What do C-Chain, P-Chain and X-Chain do?

C-Chain executes EVM-compatible smart contracts. P-Chain handles validators and network-level operations, while X-Chain handles Avalanche Native Token asset operations. All three belong to the Primary Network. Sovereign Avalanche L1 networks can define their own validation and fee arrangements; not every transaction must use AVAX.

Example

Imagine sending a supported stablecoin to a friend on C-Chain. The asset being transferred is a stablecoin, but the network fee is paid in AVAX. A balance on a different Avalanche L1 cannot simply be spent as a C-Chain balance. Sharing an ecosystem name does not combine networks into one spendable account balance.

The official network documentation lists C-Chain mainnet with chain ID 43114. Check the token network and standard when transferring; an AVAX label or similar-looking address is not enough.
