What is Exodus?

Added:
Updated:

Exodus is a self-custody wallet for viewing supported blockchain assets and signing transactions. It has mobile and desktop versions. Coins are not files stored inside the application: the balance is recorded on-chain, while keys authorize spending.

In a conventional Exodus wallet, recovery words are the user’s responsibility. That differs from a custodial exchange account where the operator manages the keys. Forgetting the application password and losing recovery access are different problems. The underlying relationship is explained in our crypto-wallet definition.

Example

Alex receives 0.02 ETH at a supported Ethereum address and sees it in Exodus. Deleting the phone app does not erase the Ethereum record. Restoring access requires the correct recovery method and compatible software that can reach the same address. Installing a fresh application alone does not automatically recover the old wallet.

Asset support is not application connectivity

Displaying an Ethereum balance does not mean a wallet can connect to every DeFi application. Exodus has removed its mobile Web3 features and announced October 1, 2026 as the extension support deadline. Check the current platform and version rather than treating every Exodus product as equivalent.

The Exodus review compares support limits, recovery options and total transaction costs through official screens and a worked example.
