What are GameFi and play-to-earn?
GameFi describes games connected to tokens, digital assets or blockchain-based economic functions. Play-to-earn (P2E) focuses on rewarding players for playing or completing tasks. The concepts overlap, but not every GameFi product offers regular income.
A game score, a transferable token and an NFT are different things. Points may exist only in the game’s database. A token’s ability to leave the game does not establish a buyer or a fixed sale price.
Example
Alex earns 100 points and 20 reward tokens in a fictional game. If the points only unlock levels, they are not saleable assets. Suppose all the tokens sell for $4, with $0.75 in selling and network costs. Net proceeds are $3.25. Without a buyer, seeing 20 tokens on screen does not mean Alex received $3.25. The numbers are hypothetical and exclude any initial spending.
A common misunderstanding
Distributing rewards does not prove that a game earns revenue. Tokens may come from its treasury. Spending for entertainment should be distinguished from spending solely to obtain larger rewards.
