What is IPFS pinning? Keeping a file available
IPFS pinning marks content for retention on a particular IPFS node. Routine garbage collection may remove temporary data; pinned content is intended to remain stored.
A project can pin through its own node or a service provider. The instruction applies to that node or service, not every computer on the network. Availability still depends on operational, reachable copies.
Example: Keeping an event poster online
An organizer adds an event poster to IPFS and pins it on a maintained node. A visitor's computer might retain a temporary copy after viewing the poster, then remove it during cleanup. The organizer's pinned copy remains a source while the node continues to store it and stays reachable.
Pinning the same content with a second independent provider adds a copy that can help during a provider outage. Before removing the first pin, verify that the second provider actually retains and serves the intended content.
