What are a memo and destination tag?
A memo or destination tag is an additional identifier used in some crypto transfers. When an exchange shares one deposit address among several customers, the extra information helps it determine which account should receive the funds.
What does a memo or tag identify?
The address identifies the destination; the required extra identifier distinguishes an account within the service. XRP destination tags can be numeric, while other networks and services use different memo types. Copy the value and type supplied by the recipient instead of guessing the format.
An optional personal note is not the same as a required memo. Writing “rent” or “payment” does not replace the account identifier supplied by the platform. A memo is not the TXID generated for the transaction either.
Does every crypto transfer need a memo?
No. The requirement depends on the network and the receiving service’s account setup. A personal wallet often does not require one, but the recipient’s current instructions still take priority. Do not invent a number when none is requested, or leave the field empty when it is required.
A transaction with a missing or incorrect memo may reach the blockchain destination without being credited to the intended exchange account. The recipient platform’s official support team can be contacted with the transaction ID, but correction or recovery is not always possible. A memo is not a secret signing key; it is still account-related information that does not need to be posted publicly.
Example
Imagine an exchange assigning Alice and Sam the same XRP deposit address. If Alice’s destination tag is 101 and Sam’s is 202, the exchange uses the tag to identify which customer should receive the credit. The address is like a building’s street address; the tag is like the apartment number. These numbers are examples only: an actual transfer must use the tag supplied by the recipient.
After checking the address and memo together, complete the pre-transfer checklist.
