What is a wallet passphrase? PIN and recovery phrase differences

Added:

A wallet passphrase is an additional secret used with recovery words to derive a different wallet in supported systems. It is not the device PIN or an app login password. Different passphrases used with the same words can produce different keys and addresses.

How it differs from recovery words and a PIN

The seed phrase supplies the underlying recovery information; a PIN restricts access to the device. In BIP39, an empty input is used when no passphrase is supplied, while a different extra input derives a different seed. The nickname “25th word” does not mean it must be one ordinary word appended from the mnemonic list. Supported characters and length depend on the product.

Example

Imagine Alex opening a standard wallet without a passphrase, then a separate wallet using the same recovery words plus a chosen passphrase. Funds sent to the second wallet do not appear in the first. Mistyping a letter’s case can open another empty wallet; an empty screen does not mean the original funds were deleted. No real recovery words or usable password are included in this example.

What happens if it is forgotten?

Ledger’s passphrase guidance states that support cannot reset a lost passphrase. Keeping the recovery words alone does not restore that passphrase wallet. Retain the exact input securely and separately, and verify that you can reopen the same account before funding it. An extra passphrase is not a mandatory security step for every user.

To place the PIN, backup and passphrase decisions in context, the first-setup checks for a hardware wallet explain the sequence and the points at which to stop.
