What is Decentraland? A virtual world explained
Decentraland is a virtual world for meeting through avatars, attending events and creating digital spaces. It is a particular application within the metaverse category, not a name for all virtual worlds.
Visiting, owning MANA and owning land are different activities. MANA is the ecosystem’s fungible token. LAND represents ownership of specific parcels on the Genesis City map. The quality of a visit and a token’s market value require separate assessments.
Example
Alex signs in to attend a friend’s virtual exhibition and travels to the event location. Walking through the exhibition does not give Alex ownership of the parcel beneath it. Hosting a venue would require a separate look at creation and deployment options; attending and operating a space are different needs.
The official description states that basic exploration is free. Paid avatar items and digital asset purchases are optional, while the application’s device requirements still apply.
Our Decentraland review evaluates access options, device requirements and the limits of the marketplace screens.
